Listen Up Daughters...
A Mother’s Journey, A Daughter’s Plea
At the age of 47, my mother passed away and went to heaven. I had not accepted the seriousness of her illness while she was going through it.
The doctors gave her three months to live, and then six months. So, when she was still with us a year and a half later, I thought we were home free.
I often imagined that upon her recovery from the surgery to remove a tumor, the size of an egg, inside her head that I’d one day say to her “Mom, remember when you had those painful seizures and we’d call for an ambulance to rush you to intensive care – with doctors and nurses standing everywhere?”
We’d be able to laugh about it by then, and she’d be more like a friend, finally accepting me for who I was, as a mother should. And me, finally appreciating her for doing the best she could.
But sadly, that day never came…and it’s truly a shame, because I still feel the pain -
Of not getting along, always trying to determine who was wrong, my being stubborn to feel strong and therefore, us ever singing our song.
So to those of you who still have your mothers, I say…
Mend those broken fences, melt down your defenses, forgive each other’s offenses and come back to your senses.
Please! Tell her that she’s smart, try your best to do your part - to let the healing start and let her back into your heart.
And then…hold each other near, release the burden of your fear; whisper in her ear, “I won’t cause you another tear.” Be happy that she’s here, so glad she lived another year.
Say, “I love you” Mama, Mother, Mom, or Ma’ Dear.

Triumphant on solid ground I stand
Victors cup still in my hand
Pressing forward through the storm
Bruised, mistreated, tattered, and worn
Stumbling closer toward another war
Not knowing what’s behind each door
Mere seeds of faith help keep me strong
Lift me back up when things go wrong
Lord, carry me over the rough roads ahead
And lovingly tuck me back into bed
Have your angels watch over me while I sleep
And dry my tears each time I weep
Give me new levels of confidence
To conquer these battles in your defense
Teach me to do all things you command
And keep the Victors Cup steady in my hand

Petals for You
by Melody M. Bickhem
(Copyright 2008)
Flowers
yellow, orange, purple and blue
This
is a bouquet of love for you
Citrus,
spring dew, ocean breeze
Sniff
them, they might make you sneeze
But
oh how lovely, a heavenly scent
Worth
every moment that I’ve spent
Picking
out the perfect vase
Arranging
each stem in its place
Enjoy
these blossoms now, today
Before
the petals fall away!
Still Doing

Life
is treating me well, I suppose
I
can still tie my shoes and blow my nose
I
can yawn and hiccup and cough and burp
But
when I eat, I often slurp
I
can barely get up to take a leak
Slow
as a turtle, cuz my legs are weak
Sharp
as a razor in the back of my mind
It’s
the stuff in the front that’s hard to find
I
do all I can with the time I keep
Since
I still wake up when I go to sleep
